Translate Words Into Equations

Before solving, name variables and write an equation that matches the story. “Total cost” often means fixed cost plus per-unit cost times quantity.

The calculator can speed up arithmetic and check work. Don’t rely on it for every step—sometimes mental math or plugging in answers is faster.

Word problems sometimes ask for a different quantity than the one you first solve for. And watch for “not,” “except,” and “least” or “greatest.”
