SAT Reading Tips That Actually Work
Written by Ascend Academic mentors—students from top universities helping others succeed.
SAT Reading rewards careful reading and clear strategy. These tips focus on what moves the needle: evidence, main idea, and avoiding traps.
Answer Evidence Pairs Together
When one question asks for a claim and the next asks which line supports it, treat them as a pair. Choose the claim first, then pick the line that directly supports that claim—not just any line that sounds relevant.
Watch for Scope and “Except”
Wrong answers often go too broad, too narrow, or contradict one detail. If the question says “except,” make sure you’re eliminating the choice that doesn’t fit.
Practice With a Timer
Pacing under time pressure is a skill. Do timed Reading & Writing sections regularly and review every missed question. For structured practice, SAT tutoring builds this into your plan.
