SAT Section Breakdown: Reading, Writing, and Math
Written by Ascend Academic mentors—students from top universities helping others succeed.
The SAT has two scored sections. Understanding what each section tests and how it’s organized helps you prepare efficiently.
Reading and Writing
This section mixes short reading passages with grammar and rhetoric questions. You’ll see evidence-based reading, vocabulary in context, and standard English conventions. Questions are multiple choice.
Math
Math covers algebra, problem-solving, and some advanced topics. Calculator is allowed for one of the two Math modules. Questions include multiple choice and student-produced response (grid-in).
Using the Breakdown in Your Prep
