Written by Ascend Academic mentors—students from top universities helping others succeed.
The Specialized High School Admissions Test (SHSAT) is the single criterion for admission to most of New York City’s specialized high schools. Here’s what families need to know.
What Is the SHSAT?
The SHSAT is a timed exam used to admit students to eight of NYC’s specialized high schools, including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, and Brooklyn Tech. It covers ELA and math; scores are combined into a single rank used for offers.
Who Takes It
Current eighth- and ninth-graders in NYC (and some eligible out-of-city students) can register. Check the DOE’s SHSAT page for exact eligibility and test dates each year.
