SAT vs ACT: How to Choose the Right Test
Written by Ascend Academic mentors—students from top universities helping others succeed.
Colleges accept both tests equally. The right choice is the test where your student can perform best with the same effort. Here’s how the two compare.
Structure at a Glance
The SAT has two sections: Reading & Writing and Math. The ACT has four: English, Math, Reading, and Science, plus an optional Writing section. Pacing differs—the ACT often feels faster per question.
| Feature | SAT | ACT |
|---|---|---|
| Sections | 2 (Reading & Writing, Math) | 4 (English, Math, Reading, Science) |
| Science | No dedicated section | Dedicated Science section (data, experiments) |
| Pacing | More time per question | Faster; less time per question |
| Math | Calculator allowed for one module | Calculator allowed throughout |
Who Might Prefer Which
Students who like a bit more time per question and fewer sections sometimes prefer the SAT. Students who read quickly and are comfortable with a dedicated Science section may prefer the ACT.
