SAT Practice Test Guide: How to Use Them Well
Written by Ascend Academic mentors—students from top universities helping others succeed.
Practice tests are one of the best tools for SAT prep—if you use them correctly. Here’s how to take them, score them, and learn from them.
Use Official Tests
The College Board offers free digital practice tests that match the current format. Use these first. Save them for timed, full-length runs so you get an accurate baseline and progress check.
Simulate Test Day
Take tests in one sitting when possible, with the same timing and breaks. No phone, no extra help. The goal is to build stamina and see how you perform under real conditions.
Review Every Miss
Don’t just check the answer. Identify why you missed it (content, process, or misread), write a rule, and do 2–3 similar questions. This is where practice tests improve your score.
